Biogas Users’ Survey 2009

Young Consultants (YC) conducted the Biogas Users’ Survey 2009 for Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL), in collaboration with the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV), under the National Domestic Biogas and Manure Programme (NDBMP). The study aimed to assess programme performance and monitor progress towards developing a sustainable and commercially viable domestic biogas sector in Bangladesh.

The survey covered Dhaka and 20 other districts and examined the direct and indirect benefits of domestic biogas technology for rural households. It assessed the effects of biogas use on household energy consumption, emission reduction, environmental conditions, health and sanitation, agricultural practices, and socio-economic well-being. The study also considered the technical performance of biogas plants, climate-related benefits, and changes in the workloads of women and children.

YC mobilized the study team, designed the survey methodology, and prepared questionnaires for primary data collection. The firm oriented field investigators and collected primary and secondary data through field surveys, key informant interviews (KIIs), and focus group discussions (FGDs).

YC subsequently conducted data entry and analysis and prepared the draft report. In consultation with IDCOL, the firm organized a national workshop to disseminate the findings among relevant stakeholders. The final report incorporated comments and observations from IDCOL and the stakeholder meeting, supporting the assessment of programme outcomes and the identification of areas for improvement.
