Survey on Job Preferences among Youth in Bangladesh

The assignment involved conducting a comprehensive survey to deepen understanding of employment conditions and job preferences among young people in Bangladesh, both before and after entering the labour market. The Japan International Cooperation Agency Research Institute (JICA-RI) engaged Young Consultants (YC) to collect and analyze data from students at public and private universities and NGO workers across five divisions of Bangladesh. The study aimed to examine youth employment preferences, understand the factors influencing career choices, and generate evidence to support a better understanding of employment-related attitudes and aspirations among young people. The survey incorporated structured questionnaires, primary data collection, stakeholder consultations, focus group discussions, and statistical data processing.

Scope of Services Provided
1. Identification of Target Respondents and Sampling

Identified and selected target respondents for the survey, including students from public and private universities and NGO workers. Established the survey sample to capture relevant information on youth job preferences and employment-related perspectives.

2. Questionnaire Development and Survey Design

Developed questionnaires for both the pilot and main surveys to collect information on job preferences and employment-related attitudes among young people. Designed the survey instruments to support systematic data collection and analysis.

3. Inception Report Preparation and Submission

Prepared and submitted the inception report outlining the survey methodology, sampling approach, data collection procedures, and implementation arrangements.

4. Training of Enumerators and Supervisors

Trained five teams of enumerators, supported by supervisors, to ensure consistent implementation of the survey methodology, appropriate interviewing techniques, and reliable collection of primary data.

5. Primary Data Collection across Five Divisions

Collected primary data from public and private universities and NGOs across five divisions of Bangladesh. Approximately 2,700 data records were collected during the field survey to capture youth job preferences and employment-related perspectives.

6. Primary Data Quality Assurance

Reviewed the collected primary data to identify inconsistencies and help ensure its accuracy, completeness, and reliability before further processing and analysis.

7. Key Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions

Conducted key informant interviews (KIIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) with relevant stakeholders and NGO workers. Gathered qualitative insights into employment preferences, career expectations, and factors influencing the employment decisions of young people.

8. Data Entry and Statistical Data Management

Processed and entered 2,500 data records into STATA to support systematic data management and subsequent statistical analysis of youth job preferences and employment-related attitudes.

9. Final Database Preparation and Submission

Compiled and submitted the final database containing the processed survey data, providing a structured dataset for further research and analysis by the client.

Key Deliverable
A final survey database containing 2,500 processed records, supported by primary data collection of approximately 2,700 records across five divisions of Bangladesh. The survey outputs provided information on youth job preferences and employment-related perspectives, supplemented by stakeholder interviews and focus group discussions.
